We've all heard the jokes about women packing way too much when they go on holiday - and new research indicates that more than half of men end up carrying the items that won't fit in their partners' suitcases.

The Telegraph reports that a survey of 2,000 people carried out by London Stansted Airport revealed that 52 per cent of men claimed that, when travelling as a couple, some of their partner's belongings ended up in their own luggage. For the typical man, this adds up to an extra five kilograms.

The poll also reveals that almost half of women admit to taking "too much" on holiday, and more than a third (37 per cent) have had to reshuffle the contents of their suitcases at the airport check-in desk as a result.

And even though a quarter of travellers admit to spending at least three hours packing their suitcases, 13 per cent said that they half left the house without their passport or boarding pass.
