Excited Texans believed they had been lucky enough to spot a flaming meteor shooting through the sky in San Antonio last week.

One local even described it as something he could now tick off his bucket list.

Bill Cooke, head of NASA's Meteoroid Environment Office, originally confirmed the footage as a bright meteor - but has now said he believes it be a plane's contrail, or vapour trail.

According to the Daily Mail, he told Life's Little Mysteries: "Reviewing the video, it does appear to be a contrail."

He added that there was a fireball on that day - but it was 7,000 miles away in New Zealand.

Experts defended their original analysis by stating that fireballs are particularly common in spring.

Mr Cooke added: "There are two peaks: one around February and the other at the end of March and early April. And this remains a mystery."
