IT jobs lead online vacancies rise

Updated:
KeyboardThe outlook for jobs remains "mixed" despite some positive signs of an increase in vacancies in some sectors, according to a new study.

Recruitment firm Monster said there was an 8% increase in vacancies posted online over the past year, fuelled by a big rise in computer-related jobs.

Research in 21 separate sectors showed vacancies increased over the past year in 16, including factories, sales, clerical support, hospitality and tourism.

Healthcare, social work and legal registered the biggest declines in recruitment, said Monster, adding that the Midlands enjoyed the biggest growth in online job vacancies over the past year, while Wales suffered the biggest decrease.

"With online job opportunities at their highest level since November 2008, it's really positive to see that the IT industry is going from strength to strength each month," said Monster managing director Julian Acquari.

"The outlook for the UK does remain mixed, but more than two-thirds of industries across the UK have exhibited annual growth which indicates that the job opportunities online are picking up again."
