British Naturism commercial manager Andrew Welch told the Telegraph : "We support this call although we don't need official designation. It takes away the hassle factor because a lot of people see naturism as illegal. Naturism isn't against the law, you can't legislate about what someone wears.
"If it were designated it would increase tourism in the area."
Local councillor Peter Rogers said he would prefer the beach, which is just a few miles from Prince William and Kate's home, to be naturist-free, but said: "It would be better either for them to be banned or, if they are going to be there anyway, for there to be proper regulation.
"In other words, either stop it or have a properly controlled part of the beach for them, which might benefit the local economy."
He added that it's the peeping Toms who are the real nuisance, saying: "It's not the nudists who are really the problem but the people who go and watch them from the trees."
The beach has been used as a backdrop for a number of films, including 2009's Clash of the Titans, and local pub landlord Phil Penson said the area is so stunning that everybody should be able to enjoying it, adding: "But it's for everybody, not just for people who want to take their clothes off."
