Is it the end of free banking? The doomsayers appear to think so. One notable - and influential - voice is Martin Wheatley, who will shortly head the new Financial Conduct Authority which replaces the Financial Services Authority next year.

Wheatley claims free banking in the UK is an "outmoded concept". Is he right?
