What hits a tech share price?

So I'm talking to a family member about BlackBerry and how hard the company needs to work to get back to a decent share price. He agrees with me but after a while I realise he isn't talking about the company's infamous outage last October, or product delays - he thinks the use of BlackBerry Messenger in the riots will have hit its share price. So, what actually does hit someone's stock?
