Weaker than expected economic growth in Brazil fuelled global recession fears and sparked a near 2% fall on the FTSE 100 Index.

London's leading shares index was 109.02 points lower at 5765.8 after official figures showed Brazil grew at 2.7% last year - a sharp slowdown from the 7.5% growth in 2010.
