Geneva Motor Show: Dacia Lodgy
Dacia is yet to make an impact on the UK, but the Renault-owned Romanian brand is scheduled to land in the UK early in 2013. This is its latest car: the Lodgy MPV.
Next year we'll get the Dacia Duster and Sandero, and, perhaps, this. Renault is yet to make its mind up on whether to bring the Lodgy to the UK.
If you're wondering, Dacia is a budget brand that will produce cars for the space arguably vacated by Skoda, Kia and Hyundai when they went upmarket; it's a space Chevrolet is trying to occupy at the moment.
The Lodgy's etymology really is as simple as it sounds: it's derived from "lodge", which Dacia says evokes a big, comfy, homely place. Just what the Lodgy is. Look how happy those people are in the shot above - the Lodgy made them that way.
Available as a five- or seven-seater, it's about the same size as Renault's Scenic and Grand Scenic models, though it will come to market at a significantly lower price point; in European money it starts at just €9,900, which is about £8,000 in proper currency - less than half the cost of a basic Scenic.
Dacia boasts class-leading space for rear-most seat occupants in the seven-seat version, and 30-litres of storage space in the cabin.
Two petrols and two diesels will be available, all from the Renault fold. A 1.6-litre with 104bhp and a 1.2-litre turbo with 113bhp take care of petrol power, while both diesels are 1.5-litre units, with either 89- or 108bhp.
This all could be neither here nor there, though. We'll find out later this year. Few will baulk at the idea of an eight grand people mover, however.
