Around 2,500 tourists gathered together on an observation deck to watch huge chunks of ice from the Perito Moreno glacier in Argentina's Patagonia fall into the lake below.

The glacier covers 250 square kilometres in the Rio Gallegos province, and is advancing into the Lago Argentino lake, according to the Daily Telegraph.

The phenomenon occurs because the glacier cuts off a river that feeds the lake. Water builds up pressure and forms a tunnel until the ice collapses.

The event has become something of an attraction for tourists who cheer as the spectacle occurs.

The last big ice fall happened back in 2008.
