Ayrton Senna's race helmet sells for £71,000
A crash helmet used by the late F1 legend Ayrton Senna has sold for a remarkable £71,000 at a Silverstone auction.
The Race Retro and Classic Car Sale auction saw £1.75m of classic cars and vintage race memorabilia sold, an amount described by the organisers as "the highest sales total [we've] achieved in recent times."
In total, 28 competition cars were sold, with the highest price given for a 1958 Tojeiro Jaguar race car (below), and the second highest a stunning 1960 Aston Martin DB4 Series II. They sold for £286,000 and £170,000 respectively.
The memorabilia sale - not including the cars - fetched £180,000, the biggest chunk of which was for Senna's used Honda-branded helmet. Its £71,000 price was significantly higher than its £50,000 pre-sale estimate.
The next Race Retro Sale will be held in May at Silverstone race circuit.
