The bitter cold snap caused travel chaos this weekend as a third of flights from Heathrow were cancelled, and snow and ice created traffic disruption.

Around six inches of snow fell this weekend across Britain, and weather forecasters have predicted the white out could last up to a month.

According to the Telegraph, Heathrow introduced a reduced flight schedule to "minimise disruption to passengers" caused by the snow, cutting half its 1,300 scheduled flights on Saturdy, but has said more than 70% of its passengers will be able to travel thanks to transfers between flights.

Flights were also delayed at Gatwick, Stansted, Birmingham and Luton.

Meanwhile, there was chaos on the roads as Britain shivered in temperatures colder than the Arctic - the coldest temp recorded was -12.4 in South Newington, Oxon, while Tromso in Norway was -8C.

According to the Express, motorists took to Twitter to complain the roads were not adequately gritted, while some drivers abandoned their cars to build snowmen on "gridlocked motorways".

Sports star Gary Lineker was one of the motorists who got stuck on the M40 for hours, tweeting: "Fell asleep. Where am I? Still on M40! Noooo!"

And, according to the Mirror, TV presenter Gaby Logan tweeted: "London, you forgot to grit the roads – no salt anywhere!"

There were also problems on the railways, with a number of services in and out of London being cancelled after the snow affected power line repairs. In London, Tube passengers reportedly had to walk along the track after a train on the Central Line broke down.

The Met Office has warned the weather is likely to stay freezing over the next few weeks.

But it wasn't all bad news: the snow turned much of the country into a winter wonderland, with children enjoying their sledges across the country, and the more adventurous attempting to climb frozen waterfalls in the Brecon Beacons (pictured top).
