New Volkswagen Golf breaks cover

No, I'm not joking, the picture above is of the new Modular Transverse Matrix (MQB) platform which will underpin every compact car from the Volkswagen Group.

This will include the seventh-generation Golf and the new Audi A3, but could also be stretched to bigger models such as the Passat and Sharan in the future.
Designed to increase efficiency and flexibility, one of the key features of this platform is the standardized position of all engines and transmissions. This includes natural gas, hybrid and electric versions.

With all the engines in the same place, Volkswagen expect to cut engineering costs and be able to produce more cars tailored to individual markets.

All models built on this platform should be safer too, as it will include technology such as the new multicollision brake. This basically works by automatically braking after the first collision to reduce any secondary impact. This feature will be standard on the new A3 and Golf.

The new seventh-generation Golf will be launched later this year.
