Never mind jetting off to the Caribbean, a British pensioner claims he has found his own piece of paradise in the English Channel where the water is heated at 20C all year round.

John Kapp, 76, takes a dip every day, and says hot water from the Shoreham power station on the Sussex coast keeps an area the size of a football pitch nice and toasty.

According to the former engineer, the heated stretch is a result of water coming from the outflow of the station, where seven tons of sea water is pumped per second through the condensers.

John can spend up to 45 minutes a day swimming in his own hot pool, which he's dubbed the Shoreham Lido.

Despite enjoying his daily swim John would like to see the hot water put to better use. He is a member of the Hove Civic Society, which is campaigning for the heat to be recovered from the water and used in nearby homes and businesses.

UK beaches are not usually known for their tropical charm, but what they lack in warmth they make up for in drama and beauty.

Some of the best beaches in Britain can be found in Cornwall, Dorset, the Isle of Wight, Isles of Scilly, Devon, Pembrokeshire, and the Scottish Islands.
