Britain set for month-long Siberian freezePA

It might be a good time to start planning that winter sun getaway, as Britain is set for a four-week Siberian freeze.

Bitterly cold temperatures and winds are sweeping their way in from Russia, and could see Britain's temperature's plunge to -4C by next Wednesday, say experts.

Weather forecasters have warned the Government of the impending cold snap so that ministers can put bad weather plans into place, like gearing gritters for action.

Motorists have also been warned to be careful, as temps could go below zero from tonight, according to the Mirror.

The Met Office has issued a severe weather warning today for ice and snow turning to slush, causing roads to be like 'skating rinks' and possible traffic disruption.

Met Office forecaster Helen Chivers said: "We had cold snaps in December and earlier this month, but it would be fair to say this period has potential to be the coldest spell this winter and the longest."

According to the Express, up to two inches of snow could fall by the end of today, with Cumbria, the Midlands and parts of Wales likely to see the white stuff.

After one of the mildest winters on record, this week has already seen a taste of a bitingly cold spell, with up to four inches of snow falling in Scotland and northern England.

Britain was thrown into travel chaos last year when one of the coldest winters on record hit the country.

But the Local Government Association has said that it's "better prepared this winter" and has stockpiled 1.4 million tons of grit, as well as investing in new gritters and salt bins.
