Crazy weather! Warm and sunny this weekend....then snow!

Updated

Talk about yo-yo weather. Freezing temperatures and up to six inches of snow in some areas today will give way to sunny, spring-like conditions and temperatures in double figures at the weekend.

And then - you guessed it - there's more snow on the way.

Met Office forecaster Helen Chivers told the Daily Express: "It really is a mixed bag.

"We are going to see snow in Scotland. The cold rain will make it icy in other parts of the north. It's all change again by the weekend with some mild air coming in, and then Monday is going to turn cold again."

Forecasters say that now, ice and treacherous road conditions are today expected to reach the Pennines and Cumbria.

Milder weather at the weekend will bring a blast of spring - with predicted temperatures of 14C in London and the south, which is three times the average for January.

And then it's all change again by Monday, when temperatures in much of the country will reach -3C.

The Met Office has described the weather as "volatile" and suggests that this relatively rare weather pattern may be caused by changes in the high atmosphere.

"Research, developed in part by the Met Office, suggests that changes such as this high up in our atmosphere can – in time – go on to affect weather patterns at surface-level. However, this is a new and very complex area of meteorology."
