MINI could clear up in Dakar
The Dakar Rally is nearing the final stages and the battle for 1st place is still very much a MINI adventure.
Three out of the five top positions are held by MINI teams, with Stéphane Peterhansel out in front placing an overall time of eight hours and 35 minutes. A sand dune grounded Joan Roma in Stage 11 for two minutes, and he is now nearly 23 minutes behind.
Third position overall goes to Giniel De Villiers in the Toyota, though he has to make up nearly an hour in order to catch Roma, who will be ensuring no mistakes are made.
It was a disastrous day for Robby Gordon as his Hummer lost a CV joint when a $1 hose clamp broke. The problems did not stop there as the clutch filled up with silt and a wheel fell off. He is now over two hours behind Peterhansel and stands in fourth position.
MINI driver Leonid Novitskiy will capitalise on Gordon's mechanical failures and may even take 4th position, as he is now less than 30 seconds behind the Hummer.
