Kate and William see in the New Year in 'Lapland teepee'

Prince William and Duchess Kate enjoyed their first New Year's Eve together as a married couple in a tent traditionally used by reindeer herders in Lapland.

According to the Daily Mail, the teepee-style tent known as a "kata", was set up in Kate's parents' garden in Berkshire, and was part of a party organised by professional host, Pippa Middleton.

The semi-nomadic Sami people use them for shelter, cooking, and smoking fish, and they are usually made of animal hides.

Pippa's chosen kata reportedly cost £3,000 to hire, and created a "canvas palace" in the garden in Bucklebury, with a dancefloor, lighting and seating for over 100 guests.

The royal couple were originally thought to be heading to Scotland to welcome the new year at Balmoral with Prince Charles and Camilla.

But they were spotted in the day playing with Kate's parents' dogs in their garden.
