Kylie has decade's most played song

Kylie MinogueKylie Minogue's award-winning song 'Can't Get You Out of My Head' was the most popular song of the decade.

That's according data compiled by PRS for Music, which monitors radio and TV as well as pub dukeboxes and cover band performance at live venues. And to think, the song was turned down by other artists before Kylie got her lungs round it.

The top five of the decade are (Number Title Artist Writer):

  • Can't Get You Out of My Head, Kylie Minogue - Cathy Dennis, Robert Davis
  • Toxic, Britney Spears - Cathy Dennis, Henrik Jonback, Pontus Winnberg, Christian Karlsson
  • Angels, Robbie Williams - Robert Williams, Guy Chambers
  • Superstar, Jamelia - Mikkel Sigvardt, Mich Hansen, Joseph Belmaati
  • Just A Little, Liberty X - John Hammond, George Hammond, Michelle Escoffery

Although Kylie made 'Can't Get You Out of My Head' a hit, it was written by Cathy Dennis and Rob Davis back in 2000. In a recent M magazine interview they explained "It was a very natural and fluid process... and was written in about three and a half hours'.

Dennis and Davis produced the song with Dennis' vocals over a number of instruments with an electronic feel. Despite being a phenomenal success the track was turned down by S Club 7 and Sophie Ellis-Bexter before Kylie.

How much is a song worth?

It is not possible to calculate how much Kylie or the song-writers made from having the hit song played so many times as it varies depending on where it is played and the audience size.

PRS for Music say that the fee for radio it can vary from a few pence per minute for a small regional or community station to almost £20 per minute for BBC Radio 2 - the most listened to station in the UK. There are different rates for TV, live performance and business use such as background music in pubs, clubs and shops.

A PRS for Music spokesman told AOL Money: "The key thing is to have it played often and in multiple places....and to write a hit to start with."

Classic songs

Also featuring within the Top 5 is Britney Spears' dance floor classic 'Toxic' and Robbie Williams infamous power ballad 'Angels'. All of these songs have been awarded an Ivor Novello for 'Most Popular Song' of their relevant year of release and have become classic songs within their own right.

Guy Fletcher, PRS for Music chairman said; "These are all classic songs of the Noughties and 'Can't Get You Out of My Head' is one of Kylie's all time greatest hits. The writing talent behind this top 5 includes legends such as Cathy Dennis and Guy Chambers and underpins the importance of good songwriting in producing a hit."
