With holiday season in full swing, August was a pretty quiet month in the personal finance world yet it emerged that parents, faced with huge price hikes during school holidays, are fuelling school truancy rates.

Figures from Department for Education revealed that 24,000 pupils miss school every day as parents opt for cheaper term-time trips – and many don't seek permission. Despite the risk of £100 fines, anecdotal evidence suggests many are prepared to take the hit as it is outweighed by the savings of taking a term-time holiday.
