What a turnaround! Drivers ditch satnavs in favour of the good old map

Motorists are abandoning satellite navigation (satnavs) in their droves and returning to the good old-fashioned map, says a new report.

A study from Kia Motors has found that drivers have become increasingly frustrated with using the gadgets because they are so unreliable. More than one-third of the 1,100 people surveyed admitted that they have lost their way despite using the them.

The most common complaints among satnav users include being taken to incorrect destinations and irritatation with instructions.

A total of 81 per cent of respondents said they preferred to find their route using a traditional map than hi-tech navigation.

The Kia Motors research also found that nearly half of all drivers (44 per cent) admit to regularly arguing with their passengers over which route to take.

Steve Kitson, Kia director said: "Only one fifth of us claim to be confident enough to find our own way based on knowledge alone and with three- quarters of Britons abandoning using navigation systems this season, let's hope an A-Z is on the Christmas list."

In May this year, a woman nearly died after being stranded for 48 days in a remote mountain region because her satnav led her astray.
