Around 100 passengers have been stranded at Gatwick for nearly a week after Air Zimbabwe's only long-haul plane was grounded due to debts of £1 million.

The airline's 767-200, called Victoria Falls, was seized by American General Supplies when it landed at Gatwick from Harare on Monday.

Some passengers were given camp beds to sleep on, before being told the plane had been seized via a US court injunction.

According to the Telegraph, departure is due for Monday night, and passengers even demanded to see proof that the debt had actually been paid.

Air Zimbabwe's London manager, David Mwenga, reportedly fled Gatwick earlier this week after being chased by furious Zimbabweans wanting a firm departure date.

Innocents Mavhunga, who has temporarily stepped into his shoes, also announced that the airline has suspended its daily flights to Johannesburg.

The news comes as South African support services company, Bid Air, grounded an Air Zimbabwe plane in Johnnesburg last week over a £320,000 debt.
