Thai airline employs first 'ladyboy' flight attendants

A new Thai airline has become the first to employ ladyboys as flight attendants.

PC Air, a new carrier that is set to provide travel across Asia, initially only intended to hire male and female cabin crew but, after receiving 100 applications from transvestites and transsexuals, revised the rules to take on members of the 'third gender'.

According to the Mirror, the president of PC Air, Peter Chan, wanted to provide opportunities for transgender people in Thailand - also know as 'katoeys' - and offered cabin crew roles to four transsexual hostesses.

Chayathisa Nakmai, Dissanai Chitpraphachin, Nathatai Sukkaset and Phuntakarn Sringern, have now made their first flight from Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok to Surat Thani province, southern Thailand, according to the Daily Mail.

The four were chosen alongside 19 female and seven flight attendants. Job requirements for katoeys is the same, but it is outlined that ladyboy employees must behave like women, and have a feminine walk and voice.

Transgender and transsexual people are widely accepted within society in Thailand, and are given more visibility than probably any other country in the world.

They are not, however, officially identified as women.
