Red mist: One off 999 Red Gold McMerc SLR for sale at £7million
Ueli Anliker is a modern day Goldmember. He loves gold. He also loves cars. So when he bought an Mercedes McLaren SLR a few years back he set about modifying it.
The £300,000 hypercar comes with 640bhp as standard but Anliker wasn't happy with that.Or for that matter its looks. So he threw £3.5million at it to create what he calls the 'Anliker McLaren SLR 999 Red Gold Dream'. We call it an eyesore and a terrible waste of a perfectly serviceable SLR.
Anliker and his team added 25 layers of red paint to the bright, tasteless bodywork, though there was 5kg of gold dust thrown into the pot. Gold dust that could have been turned into something nice, perhaps. As well as the hideous body kit, Anliker coated the headlamps, door sills and wheels in 24-carat gold.
Jewels are scattered liberally around the cabin – 600 of which are rubies. None of which bring the word 'class' to mind. The interior is trimmed in gold and red, like the exterior.
The 999 in the car's name refers to its upgraded power. Presumably done partly to sound cool and partly to counter the extra weight of 600 rubies, 25 layers of gold dust laden paint and the gold plating on the sills, etc. The 999 gold encrusted horses give the car a 210mph top speed. Not too much higher than the standard car's, come to think of it.
Either Anliker's run in to trouble or he's grown bored with having a gold-highlighted boil on his drive, so he's selling the Anliker McLaren SLR 999 Red Gold Dream for a minimum of £7million. You see, he quite fancies making some of his money back.
The ad'll probably read: "For Sale: Anliker McLaren SLR 999 Red Gold Dream. Like an SLR, but with gold, red and rubies. £POA but more than £7million. Has to be seen to be believed. Please buy it. Please."
We wish him luck and hope he's got a good head doctor.
