Britain preparing for more storms, wind and snow

Weather forecaster warned Britons to brace themselves for more storms, after a weekend of 100mph winds left at least seven people dead.

Hurricane-force gales have wreaked havoc across the country, with five sailors still missing after their cargo ship sank off the north coast of Wales. Prince William was involved in an RAF rescue of two crew members, while another was later found dead.

Experts are predicting that strong winds will return tonight, reaching 70mph in the West.

The first half of December is also likely to be see Britain battered by high wind and even snow.

The weekend weather proved tricky for motorists and travellers, as gales hit the north of England and Wales, while 114mph winds hit the Scottish Highlands.

Jonathan Powell, of Positive Weather Solutions, said it brings an end to a 'quite remarkable autumn, with extremes of temperatures, rain and strong winds, plus an unusually mild season.'

He told the Express: We've had a battering experience across parts of Scotland, also for Northern Ireland, north west England, and west Wales.

'It's been caused by a deep area of low pressure which unleashed hurricane-force gusts.'

He warned another low pressure system would cause severe gales and heavy rain again from today, even suggesting there could be floods.

'If that wasn't enough, more systems are lining up during the opening week of December to deliver yet more strong winds.

'High pressure to the south west is squeezing these low pressure systems into forming a funnel like gap between us and Iceland, which means we'll bear the brunt of it.'

But, the good news is that forecasters have said it is unlikely Britain will this year see a big freeze on the scale as the travel chaos-causing one in 2010.
