The extreme winter weather between October 2010 and February this year caused damage to over three million Brits' homes, according to a study by Churchill Home Insurance. The insurer saw a 45 percent increase in the number of claims for escape of water caused by issues such as burst and frozen pipes compared with the previous winter.

There is concern that another deep freeze this year will lead to further damage if homeowners aren't well-prepared.
