We are all familiar with that sinking feeling when something goes wrong around the house and you're faced with dreaded call-out charges for tradesman, followed by hourly rates and the potential cost of replacement parts.

In fact, call out charges alone for home emergencies can hit £140, according to new research from the AA's Home Emergency Response Service, so how do you protect against these spiraling costs?
