A three-year-old boy has died after being swept into the sea from a coastal wall in Kirkcaldy, Fife.

A lifeboat team rescued him from the water and he was taken to hospital, but died a short time later.

The incident happened shortly before 3.30pm yesterday and the boy, who has not yet been named, was with his family at the time.

The RNLI and Kinghorn coastguard team were at the scene within 10 minutes and gave the boy medical attention aboard the boat before he was taken to an ambulance waiting at the harbour.

Superintendent Dougie Milton, who is co-ordinating the Fife force's probe into what happened, said: "We are currently investigating this incident to establish the full circumstances.

"We are keen to establish the full facts of how this apparent tragedy occurred."
