We all have that guilty moment when we find the lettuce reduced to a strange green liquid at the back of the vegetable drawer, or when we rummage through the tin cupboard and stumble across water chestnuts bought on a whim in 2006.

However, these aren't isolated incidents, because apparently we throw away 10% of all the food we buy. So what can we do about it?
