Mazda to resurrect rotary engine as a range-extending hybrid

Mazda is assessing the possibility of bringing back its 'dirty' Wankel engine in a much cleaner form.

With the axing of the RX-8 by Mazda it was thought the oil-thirsty, torque-devoid rotary motor would die a death too, but the Japanese firm has plans for the famous engine to live, turning it into a Vauxhall Ampera style range-extending hybrid.
