Floods last night caused chaos in Britain and severe weather warnings have been issued in some parts of the country.

Warnings remain in place in Scarborough, North Yorkshire, Bridlington, and East Yorkshire after gale force winds and torrential rain hit.

The Environmental Agency has also issued flood alerts for rivers and coastal areas in Cornwall and Devon, as well as Wales.

A 13-year-old girl went missing last night as she was walking her dog on the coast of St Agnes in Cornwall, but was later found by a team of 80 rescuers.

Cornwall council's highways and environment services department received more than 300 calls about accidents caused by bad weather yesterday, including fallen trees, blocked drains and surface water flooding.

Torbay Council even closed its seafront to traffic in the afternoon because of fears over high tide flooding.

An Environment Agency spokesman told the Daily Mail: 'There have been some reports of flooding to property and continued disruption to travel is possible.

'Given the potential for very heavy localised downpours, small, fast responding rivers and streams are particularly prone to flooding, especially in Cornwall and West Devon.

'Strong winds and high tides in South Devon are also increasing the risk of localised flooding in coastal areas. Some precautionary closures of roads have been organised by local authorities.'

And a spokesman for MeteoGroup told The Sun: 'The heavy rain we had in the South and the South West yesterday has pushed north-eastwards across England and Wales into southern Scotland overnight.

'Any lingering rain across England and Wales will clear this morning, but across northern and eastern Scotland it will linger for much of the day.

'There will be some heavy and prolonged outbursts there.

'Following that rain there will be sunny spells and showers, some of which will be quite heavy, and possibly some lightning strikes.'

Meanwhile, severe flooding in Dublin has caused travel chaos in the city. Read more here.
