Five holidaymakers have been injured and flights severely disrupted after a ceiling collapsed at the check-in area of Faro Airport in Portugal.

A fierce storm ripped off part of the airport roof, leaving one Brazilian tourist with a fractured skull and other broken bones.

Four Irish holidaymakers were left with cuts and bruises, while 50 others ran for their lives as roof panels in the departures terminal tore away.

Flights were cancelled following the incident, and after the control tower's windows were blown out.

British passenger John Dikken told The Sun: 'It looked like a plane flying very low. I was so scared - and then glad to be alive.'
