Bangers and cash - an easy way to scrap your car

A fledgling enterprise set up to take the hassle out of people scrapping their old, unwanted cars has been nominated as a finalist for the BBC World Challenge programme.
Giveacar is a not-for-profit organisation that will come round to your house and pick up your old wreck free of charge. The tedium of filling out forms and chasing the DVLA is left to the staff, who then ask for a nominated charity to donate all of the money gained to, less administrative costs.

Cars that are worth more than scrap value are auctioned off in an effort to raise more money for the individual's selected charity.

Already a booming success, Giveacar has raised nearly half a million pounds for more than 450 charities in less than two years. It is the first company of its kind to offer the service and is completely independent and fully licensed.

Giveacar is now the only UK finalist in the BBC's World Challenge programme, hoping to win a $20,000 grant up for grabs.

The World Challenge programme is a competition that invites projects from around the world to come up with ideas to improve social, environmental and community issues.

Manager of Giveacar, Alex Harvey said: "There are thousands of cars sitting unwanted in garages, on driveways and by the side of the road and each one could raise vital funds for whichever charity their owners choose to support.

"If we can use the BBC World Challenge to encourage more people to contact Giveacar and to donate their cars, we will be able to do more to help those charities that really touch people's hearts," Harvey added.

The World Challenge competition ends on the 11 November and Giveacar are hoping for as many votes as possible to win the prize fund.
