Speeding motorists in Geordie Land must have been wondering why the were never caught when shooting past a Gatso camera but now the cat is out of the bag.

It's been revealed that the 14 speed cameras in Newcastle upon Tyne have not actually worked at all for two years and some of them have even been switched off completely since 2007.

In a bid to save money, some of the cameras were never connected to mains power while others weren't used because the council didn't want to pay the £500 cost of the warning signs needed to comply with the Department of Transport regulations.
