Families heading to Tenerife for winter sun this half-term could find their holiday costing a lot more than they bargained for.

Prices on the Canary Isle are 86% more expensive than on the Costa del Sol in mainland Spain, according to a Post Office survey.

Although items have risen by 15% in Spain, it is still the cheapest destination in Europe.

A basket of everyday essentials, which includes a bottle of fizzy drink, postcards and a meal for four, adds up to £59.58 in Spain compared to £110.56 in Tenerife.

Even Orlando is cheaper than Tenerife with items costing £78.77.

Sarah Munro, head of Post Office Travel Money, said: "Orlando has emerged as good value for bargain hunters. Even though the pound has dipped to a 2011 low against the dollar in recent weeks, the family favourite is 76% cheaper than its rival Miami."

Tenerife is especially popular during October and November with temperatures in the mid-20Cs.
