You'd think it was big cats or charging rhinos that posed the biggest dangers on a game reserve in the South African bush, but tourists now have a new threat to watch out for - crazy bucks.

A 17-year-old cyclist has earned himself the nickname 'Buck Norris' after a 23-stone antelope charged into him while he was taking part in in the 38 km Time Freight MTB Express mountain bike race at Albert Falls Dam, a reserve 20km outside the city of Pietermaritzburg in Kwa-Zulu Natal. The mountain biker, Evan van der Spuy, was cycling across the game reserve - and was actually in second place - when the animal appeared from nowhere and smashed into his side.

Evan's helmet was left shattered but, remarkably, he escaped without serious injury. He was stabilised with a neck brace before being taken to hospital for overnight observation, and was treated for minor concussion, whiplash, and bruising.

He told outdoor activity website Field & Stream: 'I saw the animal moving to cross the road in front of me, but when I saw how close it really was, I was shocked. Then, from the moment it hit me I was unconscious. I actually don't know what happened from then.'

And now the cyclist has found internet fame, with the clip already receiving over three million hits on YouTube.

His 'Team Jeep' colleague Travis Walker, who caught the walloping on a camera mounted on his bike, can be heard shouting 'Watch the buck!', seconds before it crashes into him.

The Nyoni Trail at Albert Falls Dam and Game Reserve is a haven for game lovers and tourists keen to see zebra, rhino, giraffe and antelope in their natural habitat.
