A new taxi rank at Leeds Bradford Airport could cost the taxpayer an eye-watering £1 million.

Leeds City Council is considering building the rank on Whitehouse Lane to ease congestion since a £2 drop-off charge, introduced in May, has seen an increase in traffic congestion, and drivers performing U-turns or illegally parking to avoiding paying the fee.

In a report to councillors, officials said the 'existing arrangements' are considered to be 'unsatisfactory', but has also revealed that the cost of building a new rank will be large due to the amount of engineering required.

According to the BBC, it has warned the council that the cost of a 22-space rank will be at least £515,000 and could increase to a further £325,000.

There could also be additional optional costs of £65,000 for landscaping and customer waiting facilities, it said.

Councillors will meet to consider the proposal on 12 October.
