Living close to a volcano can be a life fraught with danger but for Donna and Steve O'Meara having the constant threat of a volcanic eruption hanging over them is a choice made out of a shared passion.

The couple's house is on the volcano and not just any volcano, the world's most active: Kilauea in Hawaii.

The volcano has had more than 80 eruptions in the last 200 years but despite this Donna And Steve spend their life together taking photos of lava fields and undertaking important research.

Donna and Steve have such a love for all things lava that they even got married at the summit of the volcano a year after meeting. Donna told the Metro: "We wore formal wedding attire but made sure we put our trainers on in case we needed to run."

Their company Volcanic Watch are hoping to predict when a volcano is likely to erupt and therefore save the lives of anyone living nearby.

Steve insists the couple aren't scared living on a volcano but are always wary, he said: "It is dangerous and we are always cautious, you have to be.

"One moment of stupidity could cost you your life. If you get too close to a volcano, you could actually see your blood boil; you would literally burn from the inside out."

The couple met at an astronomy class, by their second date they realised it was meant to be after Steve asked Donna on a helicopter ride over the erupting Kilauea. It was Christmas Day.

Donna explained: "I asked him out for a date and then after our first date he called me up on Christmas Eve and said 'Would you like to go and see Kilauea, it's erupting?'. "So for our second date we spent Christmas Day in a helicopter hovering over this erupting volcano and from that moment on I was hooked. We've been inseparable ever since."
