For even the well-seasoned holidaymaker, flying can still conjure up reams of excitement: butterflies in the stomach on take off, breathtaking views above the clouds, the descent towards the destination airport...

But sometimes, take off and landing can feel rather hairy, especially at airports built in areas where space and, er, flat bits are lacking. These 'scareports' aren't for the faint-hearted - there are flight routes that force planes to land on beaches, fly past active volcanoes and even land on ice... check these out and let us know if you've got any to add to the list!
