If you've been sunbathing this weekend, you'd better make the most it - because the hottest October for a century is going to give way to frost, snow and even a hurricane before the end of the week.

Forecasters say that temperatures will drop by 18c within a matter of days - and the tail end of Hurricane Ophelia, which is currently racing towards Canada, will batter Scotland and the north of England later this week.

In the south, widespread frost will set in, while storms and even snow will hit the north. The forecast is a complete contrast to this weekend, when hundreds of thousands of sun worshippers took last-minute breaks and day trips to beaches in the south and south east.

Temperatures in parts of the UK were hotter than Mexico, Spain and Cuba as the freak heatwave sent the mercury rocketing.
