A woman has been killed while cycling with her husband on a holiday celebrating their first wedding anniversary.

Elaine Dunne, 30, who was originally from Worksop but lived in Leicester, died at the scene of the crash, which happened at 11.50am on Wednesday morning around seven miles from John O'Groats in Scotland.

Her husband Chris was also involved in the collision with a car being driven by a 93-year-old woman, and is in intensive care.

The couple, both keen and 'safety-conscious' cyclists, were on a week-long holiday in Scotland and were reportedly making their way to the station in Wick to get the train back to Leicester.

Elaine's younger sister, Pauline Hodkin, 25, from Worksop, said 'life will never be the same again'.

She told the This is Leicestershire: 'We were such a close family and Elaine had so many friends. She was so well loved by so many people.

'She was the best sister anyone could have and a loving aunt and daughter.

'Our parents are completely in shock. You don't expect your daughter to go before you.'

Pauline also revealed that Scotland was a particularly special place for the couple, as Chris had proposed to Elaine on the West Highland Way several years back.

The elderly driver of the Nissan Micra is being treated for shock at the Caithness General Hospital in Wick, and inquiries into the accident are 'on-going' said a Northern Constabulary spokesman.
