One of Britain's most prominent travel companies, Thomas Cook, has announced it is set to close 24 of its shops across the UK.

The holiday company has stated that 22 of the closures were due to leases expiring, with only two being because they were making a loss.

Thomas Cook's UK chief executive said: 'Our high street stores are the most popular way for customers to book with us and an essential part of our multi-channel approach, alongside websites and sales centres.

'However, there are times, like today, when we will propose closing a small number of individual stores to remain effective in this competitive environment.

'We will do all that we can to minimise the impact on affected customers and colleagues.'

The company has already begun a 90-day consultation with more than 100 staff affected by the closures, which stretch from Northampton to Bangor.

The news comes as the company also announces a 250-strong job cut in the Thomas Cook Airlines staff at Manchester Airport as it axes six aircraft from its UK fleet this winter.
