EcoVelocity show is a winner
The first entirely green car show debuted in London when Mayor of London Boris Johnson led a cavalcade of the latest in electric cars into Battersea Power station on Thursday.
Driving these cars isn't restricted to our politicians though. Visitors can get behind the wheel and sample a range of electric, hybrid and diesel models from the likes of Nissan, Lexus, Vauxhall, VW, Honda and Seat on a specially-prepared track. While the circuit may initially seem fairly small, it does enable drivers to get feel of the car and the poor road surface is actually a benefit, demonstrating how these cars might fare on the UK's pot hole-riddled roads.
The test drives really are worth waiting for. Waiting times varied from two minutes to an hour but to save more time make sure you have both parts of your driving licence otherwise you will be getting very friendly with the staff at the DVLA who check your licence for outstanding points or driving bans. I must have spoken to them eight times in as many hours.
The majority of the manufacturers welcome anyone from the age of 19 upwards to drive their cars, although there were a few notable exceptions; Vauxhall, VW and Lexus would not allow drivers under 21 or 25 to drive due to insurance risks.
Being 21 and holding a full clean licence since I was 17, this was sometimes hard to fathom. After all, the course is on private land and marshals keep a watchful eye on your speed while most of the attendants you drive with are qualified instructors. However, after launching a charm offensive I managed to try them all apart from the Vauxhall Ampera.
EcoVelocity is packed full of fun events for youngsters and families, including Segway rides, motorcycle lessons for children aged five to 11 and interactive arcade games that can quickly banish any threats of boredom. Youngsters from 11 and 16 were also able to test their driving skills and learn some rules of the road in a number of SEAT Ibiza Ecomotives. Finally, there was an impressive parade from What Car? of award-winning ultra-quiet eco cars and green supercars.
The EcoVelocity Motor Show still has three days to go and you can book your tickets from here.
