Brand new Defender to land in Frankfurt
Replacing an iconic family member isn't easy – just ask Atomic Kitten or Sugababes – but that's the challenge Land Rover is currently facing: a new Defender is due in 2015.
This concept, the DC100, is the first stab at it. While confirming what we all knew anyway, that an all-new Defender will go on sale in 2015, Land Rover has shown what it might look like.
This design trial run, which Land Rover says "investigates the potential future direction of the iconic Defender" will hit the Frankfurt motor show in September.
We don't know too much about it, although it's a fair bet that the finished car will look very similar, in a slightly less gawky sort of way.
Jaguar design director Jerry McGovern says: "Replacing the iconic Defender is one of the biggest challenges in the automotive design world; it is a car that inspires people worldwide.
"This isn't a production-ready concept but the beginning of a four-year journey to design a relevant Defender for the 21st century."
The company says that it plans to enlist the help of "existing and potential customers" during the design phase, too. Presumably that won't include Victoria Beckham, or creative design guru Swizz Beatz, who's already taken.
