A teenage boy from Yorkshire has been seriously injured in a jet skit accident while on holiday in Serbia.

Peter Holmes, 17, from Leeds, suffered head injuries in a collision on the River Sava, in Belgrade.

Peter, who was on holiday with parents Sofia and Robert Holmes, twin brother Alex and sister Vikki, is in the intensive care unit at the Clinical Centre of Serbia, Belgrade.

There were four people involved in the crash, and the three others were uninjured, Peter's sister Vikki, 19, did not see the crash but saw him lying face down in the water.

She jumped into the river and helped other jet-skiers lift him to the shore, where Alex and mum Sofia were anxiously waiting.

A jet-skier doctor gave him emergency treatment while waiting for an ambulance to arrive.

The British teens were taken out by the Sava Jetski Club of Serbia, and were all wearing lifejackets, but not helmets.

Mrs Holmes told the Yorkshire Post: 'It was Peter's first trip to Serbia and he had been looking forward to the holiday all year.

'He is a keen sportsman but has no previous experience of jet-skiing. We were assured by the jet-ski club that are children were in safe hands.'

Mr Holmes, a journalist for the Yorkshire Post, told the paper: 'Doctors say he has a good chance of making a full recovery from his head injuries but it is still early days and we are keen to get him home as soon as possible.'
