Baby animal alert! Rare lemur born at Linton Zoo

Updated

The Aol Travel team are suckers for a newborn baby animal, and this little lemur born at Linton Zoo in Cambridgeshire had us all chanting 'ahhhhh'.

The rare Madagascan lemur is the first to be born at a UK zoo for four years, and the arrival of tiny Tia, now 12 weeks old, has caused great excitement at Linton Zoo, which manages the European programme aimed at saving the species from extinction.

Lemurs come from Madagascar, an island off the East coast of Africa, where numbers are in decline.

In Madagascar, the mongoose lemur is limited to only one protected area, the Ankarafantsika Nature Reserve and they are now ranked vulnerable on the Red List compiled by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

Linton Zoo has been working closely with other zoos in the conservation programme to provide Tia's parents with the right conditions to encourage them to breed. Zoo keepers have called their new arrival Tia as it means 'to love' in Malagasy.
