A third of Brits never pay bills on time

Are you guilty of letting bills stack up unpaid and only paying when that final red reminder pops through the letter box?

Around a third of Brits admit to paying bills late, so which one are we most likely to leave and what you do if you're really struggling to pay?

Council Tax is the bill we most frequently pay late, according to research by discount website, myvouchercodes.co.uk, followed by mobile phones contracts and gas or electricity bills.

We're less likely to leave TV, home phone and broadband, as well as mortgage or rent payments.

Of the 32% of us that admit to paying bills late, 46% said they did so 'frequently', whilst 38% said 'every now and then' and 16% said 'rarely'. The majority admitted to having to wait until they had the money available, while a few just blamed forgetfulness.

Mark Pearson, chairman of MyVoucherCodes.co.uk, spoke about the study: "Paying bills late is easily done, especially if you don't have direct debits set up for all of your outgoings. Some people aren't as keen to have direct debits and prefer to pay bills individually as and when it is needed and that's perfectly fine as long as you can keep on top of it.

"I was quite surprised that council tax was the bill most commonly paid late by Brits, because that's really the one that can get you in the most bother. It's important to budget each month so you always have enough for your bills when they need to be paid."

Setting up a direct debit is the easiest way to ensure your bills are paid on time, but what should you do if you're so stretched you can't pay? Well certainly don't ignore the bill – it is best to inform the provider as soon as possible if you are struggling. Providers are more likely to be sympathetic if get to in touch to explain your situation and commit to paying what you can afford.

If the issue is more serious than a single bill that you're struggling with one month, it is important to see free and independent advice from one of the debt charities, such as Citizen's Advice, the Consumer Credit Counselling Service or National Debtline.
