A 24-year-old man has been arrested after landing his helicopter on a Pacific Island beach – so he could buy sweets at the local supermarket.

The Australian man and a friend flew to the little Pacific island of Nauru and left his aircraft on the beach while he bought chocolate and fizzy drinks.

When they returned, police were waiting at the chopper, which was parked illegally, and it was flown to the airport under onboard escort.

The pair had been stationed on a Taiwanese fishing vessel for more than two months and defended themselves by explaining to police that they were going 'sea crazy'.

According to news.com.au, the pair spent the night in the island's jail, and will face fines of up to $100,000 for unauthorised landing and penalties for breaching immigration laws.

That was one very costly sugar craving...
