Bentley to build lavish Range Rover-beater

Bentley is world-famous for its super-fast, ultra-luxurious saloons, coupes and Grand Tourers, but now it seems that the brand is intent on breaking into the world of SUVs under the guidance of new boss, Wolfgang Durheimer.

The former head of research and development at Porsche was the man who masterminded the Cayenne (which subsequently became the firm's best-selling model) and it looks like he intends to pull off the same trick with Volkswagen's British marque.

According to Autocar magazine, the future Bentley will outclass current leader of the hi-end SUV pack, Range Rover, with the kind of wood and leather finish the manufacturer is renowned for.

Underneath there's every chance the engineers will opt to share the same Volkswagen platform which underpins the next generation of Audi Q7, but Bentley is almost certain to select the kind of mammoth powerplants which will distinguish it from its mainstream siblings.

They could include the manufacturer's first diesel in the shape of the V12 TDI which Audi revealed a couple of years ago, but has subsequently failed to find an appropriate home for.

Of course, none of this will come cheap. Or soon. The Bentley SUV is still very much in the development stage and is unlikely to appear before 2014. When it does, it will probably wear a £150,000 price tag.
