July's best-selling cars

Ford's dominance of the best-selling car charts continued in July with the Fiesta notching up yet another month at the top.

The Blue Oval's city car has been a raging success this year finding an incredible 58,338 homes – 6,695 were shifted in July alone and it's also the best-selling car of 2011.
Ford secured second place in the chart too with its Focus finding 6,235 homes – pushing its annual tally up to 50,060.

However, July saw new car sales fall by 3.5 per cent to 131,634 units – the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders said this was "in line with expectations".

"New car registration figures fell marginally in July reflecting the impact of slower economic growth and subdued consumer confidence," said Paul Everitt, SMMT chief executive.

"Robust demand in the fleet sector helped to bolster weaker private demand. While the coming months remain challenging, performance in the second half of 2011 is expected to keep the market on course to reach around 1.93 million units."

Also making the top 10 best sellers was the Vauxhall Corsa taking third place with 5,122 sales, the Volkswagen Golf secured fourth with 4,272 and the Astra was fifth with 4,084 models finding new owners.

Vauxhall took sixth spot too – its third position in the top 10 – with the Insignia shifting 4,037 units. BMW's 3 Series took seventh (3,693 sold) and the VW Polo was eighth (3,684 sold).

The British-built Nissan Qashqai notched up ninth with 3,391 units sold and rounding off the top 10 was the VW Passat shifting 2,514 models.

The modest fall in July had been expected by the SMMT with the full-year forecast edging down to 1.93m units – a five per cent drop compared to the 2010 market.

The supermini segment accounted for an improved 34.2 per cent share of the July market, but only the "mini" and "executive" segments posted growth in the month with all others falling.
