Coach drivers spark terror by switching seats at 60mph
Two coach drivers caused terror among their passengers by switching seats while they were driving at 60mph, as one of them needed to go to the toilet.
The coach was taking 50 Portsmouth football fans to watch their team play Middlesbrough in the Championship on Saturday, and passengers told of their horror as one driver on the Vision Travel coach stood up while still holding the wheel and the other took his place.
As the driver stood up, the bus lurched from left to right while it was travelling along the A34 about 90 minutes into the journey.
Vision Travel, which is Portsmouth FC's official travel partner, acted quickly in response to fans' fears and sent a replacement driver to Middlesbrough's ground to bring the coach and its shaken passengers home.
One passenger, Paul Smith, 54, said: "It's the sort of stunt you'd expect Indiana Jones or James Bond to pull off but not your coach driver on the way to a Portsmouth away game.
"I was listening to my iPod just before 8am when suddenly we violently lurched across the lanes. Stuff was falling out from the overhead racks and then we lurched back again. I just thought "What the hell is going on?"
"Then, remarkably, the guy who had been driving the coach was walking down the aisle to use the toilet at the back of the coach.
"Reality quickly sunk in. They had switched coach drivers while we were doing 60mph along the motorway. It certainly made the old heart beat faster for a few minutes."
Peter Sharpe, the owner of Vision Travel, which is based in Cosham, said a full investigation will take place today calling on both drivers and stewards on the coach to explain what happened.
He added: "I know one of the guys was sick because he was very poorly all day. We sent up another driver but I still don't know exactly what happened. The passengers were shaken up apparently but until I know exactly what happened I can't really comment."
